That Spicy Chick

Homemade Spicy Mayonnaise

Learn how to make your own Homemade Spicy Mayonnaise with this easy two-step method! It’s super quick to make, customizable, and the perfect condiment for BBQ season!

So you must be thinking, why on earth is this chick making mayonnaise at home?! And you are totally right for wondering this.

I mean, mayonnaise is a fairly cheap condiment that’s available in practically every supermarket and grocery store, amiright or amiright? So why bother making your own, you ask?

Well, I’ll tell you why. There are two important reasons why you should be making your own mayo at home:

  1. So that you can customize it to your taste.
  2. And because fresh mayo ALWAYS tastes better than store-bought in my honest and humble mayo-loving opinion! It’s creamier, dreamier, and 💯 times tastier!

This Homemade Spicy Mayonnaise is ridiculously easy to make. Like just two steps and five minutes and you’re done. It’s also spicy, smoky, and just about the best condiment you can have on hand for summer BBQs!

Bonus? It’s made with just a few everyday ingredients, and I bet you already have them all on hand.

So without further ado, let’s make some and spice up your summer!

HOMEMADE SPICY MAYONNAISE INGREDIENTS

To make this Homemade Spicy Mayonnaise recipe, you only need the following handful of ingredients:

  • Egg: Any regular large egg from the supermarket will do.
  • Garlic cloves: Just one to two small cloves will do the trick.
  • Oil: Use a light and neutral flavored oil such as vegetable, canola, grapeseed, or safflower oil. You will need 1 cup.
  • Lemon Juice: As always, I recommend using freshly squeezed lemon juice. I use a tablespoon and a half, but feel free to use more or less to suit your taste.
  • Seasonings: Good ol’ kosher salt a freshly cracked black pepper.
  • Spices: Smoked paprika and ground cayenne for some smoky flavor and heat!
  • Hot Sauce: Whatever kind is your favorite! I’m a huge fan of Bacon Hot Sauce because…BACON!! In addition, it has a lovely smoky flavor to it that does wonders for this spicy mayo!
  • White Sugar (optional): I occasionally add a pinch of sugar to help balance the acid and heat in this spicy mayo, but feel free to omit it as it is optional.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE SPICY MAYONNAISE

To make this homemade spicy mayonnaise with this easy method, you’ll need a handheld immersion blender and a jar or measuring cup that snugly fits the head of the blender. If you use a jar that’s too big, the blender won’t be in direct contact with the egg and lemon juice, and proper emulsification will also be prevented. I like to use a jar with a lid so that I can just cover the mayo and pop it in the fridge instead of having to transfer it to a jar or airtight container after making the mayo.

So to make this mayo in two shakes, simply…

  1. Add all the ingredients to a jar or measuring cup in this order: the egg first, then the lemon juice, garlic, seasonings and spices, the hot sauce of your choice, and finally the oil last. Allow the mixture to settle for 20-30 seconds.
  2. Blend: Immerse the handheld blender all the way into the cup and blend on high speed. Slowly lift the head of the immersion blender as the mixture turns creamy, then remove it from the jar.

That’s it! You now have delicious and super creamy spicy mayonnaise in front of you! Transfer the mayo to a jar airtight container or jar with a lid (if you used a measuring cup), and store it in the fridge for up to two weeks.

VARIATIONS

Now that you know how to make your own spicy mayonnaise at home, you don’t always just have to make this particular spicy mayonnaise recipe. The world of mayonnaise is now your oyster, so below are some possible mayo variations that you can try.

  • Garlic Mayonnaise: Add 3-4 cloves garlic and omit the spices and hot sauce.
  • Wasabi Mayonnaise: Add a tablespoon of wasabi powder in place of the spices and hot sauce. It’s super tasty on top of grilled fish like salmon and cod!
  • Peri Peri Mayonnaise: Grab some peri peri seasoning and/or sauce and make this delicious mayo to go with your spicy grilled chicken!
  • Sriracha Mayonnaise: Always a hit and crowd favorite! Simply just add a tablespoon of Sriracha sauce instead of another hot sauce and omit the spices!
  • Herby Mayonnaise: Chop up your favorite herbs like parsley, dill, coriander, and/or basil and make a herby mayonnaise. This fresh and light beauty is another summer favorite of mine, and it really brightens up any burger or sandwich! In addition, it tastes fabulous as a summer salad dressing if you thin it out with a little bit of water!
  • Regular Mayonnaise: Omit the spices and hot sauce, and add a teaspoon of Dijon mustard to make plain good ol’ mayo!

WAYS TO SERVE HOMEMADE SPICY MAYONNAISE

There are several ways to use this Homemade Spicy Mayonnaise. Below are some of my favorite ways to use it!

  • Spread it on your Sandwich bread
  • Squirt it on top of Hot Dogs
  • Slather it on your Burger buns
  • Add some water to thin it out and use it as a Salad Dressing or Dip
  • Serve it with Grilled Meats or Seafood like spicy grilled chicken or fish.
  • Use it as the base for a Spicy Chicken Salad instead of using regular mayonnaise. Just like I did below in this spicy mayo BLT with spicy mayo chicken salad sandwich!

These are just some ideas, but feel free to get creative and serve it with or on whatever you like!

HOW LONG WILL THE SPICY MAYONNAISE KEEP?

If stored properly in an airtight jar or container in the fridge, this spicy mayonnaise should keep for about two weeks.

CAN I MAKE THIS VEGAN?

Although I haven’t personally tried making a vegan mayonnaise before, here’s a great article with three recipes for vegan mayo. The gist of the article is that in place of the egg, you can use soy milk or silken tofu to make mayonnaise too.

  1. I am so glad I found this recipe, out of like 20 that I looked at yours was the only one that didn’t use store bought mayo!! I will definitely be making this for hubby! Thank you!!!

  2. Thank you so much for this recipe! I ran out of peri-peri mayo the other day so figured I’d give this a crack and there is no way I am ever buying pre-made spicy mayonnaise ever again. This was so easy, quick and the flavour? Amazing!!!! I used a chipotle hot sauce and left out the sugar and am now working out how to put it on all of my lunches over the next week 😀
