About This Recipe
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I LOVE my air fryer! It’s basically like having a mini oven on the counter that works much faster and gives you crispy food and juicy meat. Unlike the oven, it doesn’t heat up the entire kitchen!
Today, I’m sharing a healthy side dish or appetizer made in the air fryer – these Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges!
They’re easy to make in about 20 minutes (including prep and cook time!) and are such a quick and convenient nutritious side dish!
They’re very much like sweet potato fries, but minus the extra oil. They also have a shorter cooking time thanks to the air fryer. With soft and fluffy sweet potato flesh on the inside and crispy outside, you can feel good about eating these with your burger, sandwich, grilled meat or on their own with your favorite dipping sauce as a snack!
While I’ve shared a simple salt and pepper seasoned sweet potato wedges recipe, check out the ‘Variations’ section if you’d like to jazz up your sweet potato wedges with other flavorful seasoning blends.

Why This Recipe Works
- Quick and easy! All you need is 21 minutes, making this is the perfect side dish to your main on busy nights!
- Healthy side or snack. Enjoy them with your burger, fries, grilled meat or on their own as a healthy snack!
- Less oil. Thanks to the air fryer, you need minimal oil to cook them but they’ll still be wonderfully crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
- Packed with fiber and nutrients. Sweet potatoes are packed with fiber and nutrients like vitamin A, beta-carotene and potassium. They’re excellent for digestion and eye health.
- DELICIOUS! Try them once and I guarantee this will become your favorite healthy go-to side dish!
Ingredient Notes and Substitutes

- Sweet Potatoes: Use any kind you love! Thick and long sweet potatoes are ideal as they’re easier to cut into wedges. But if you only have the thin and long sweet potatoes on hand, they’ll work fine too. You can peel the skin if desired but I left it on as its full of nutrients and I love the taste.
- Olive Oil Cooking Spray: Or you can use avocado oil spray, olive oil or avocado oil instead.
- Seasonings: I kept it simple with just fine sea salt and black pepper but check out the ‘Variations’ section below for different seasoning ideas.
- Dipping sauce: I served them up with chili ketchup but feel free to serve with your favorite dipping sauce! Or you can serve these sweet potato wedges up plain as a side to your burger, sandwich, grilled chicken or steak, pizza, etc.

How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
Below is a step-by-step overview on how to make this recipe. Keep scrolling down to get to the recipe card below with the full recipe and detailed instructions!
Preheat the air fryer. Preheat at 400°F/200°C for 3 minutes (or according to manufacturer’s instructions).

What to Serve with Sweet Potato Wedges
- Burgers. Homemade air fryer chicken burgers, veggie burgers, or grilled beef burgers or even hot dogs.
- Grilled chicken. Or try them with these Juicy Baked Chicken Breasts!
- Salads. I love them as a side to my kale Caesar salad.
- Sandwiches and wraps. Think tuna melt sandwich, a classic chicken salad sandwich, or these Turkey and Chicken Cranberry Sliders on game day or when you’re using up leftover Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey or chicken! They’re also tasty alongside this Korean Chicken Wrap.
- Favorite dipping sauces: Dip them in my Kebab Shop Garlic Sauce (warning: addictive), regular ketchup, spicy ketchup, gochujang mayo, sriracha, sriracha mayo, Perinaise (peri peri spicy mayonnaise – YUM!), Thai sweet chili sauce, barbecue sauce, honey mustard or garlic aioli.

Storing and Reheating Leftovers
- Storing: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- To freeze: Once cooled, transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.
- Reheating: To restore the crispiness, I recommend reheating in the air fryer and not the microwave. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F/190°C for 3 minutes. Line up the wedges in an even layer and air fry for 3-5 minutes (5- 10 minutes if reheating from frozen), shaking the basket halfway until heated through.
Cook’s Tips
- Don’t overcrowd. If you have a small air fryer, air fry in batches instead of overcrowding the basket. While the sweet potatoes can touch, make sure they are in a single layer so that there is proper hot air circulation to ensure they cook evenly and become crispy.
- Rinse the sweet potatoes well. Scrub well and remove all dirt and stringy parts, especially if you are keeping the skin on.
- Serve immediately. Though you can store and reheat these air fryer sweet potato wedges if absolutely needed, they have the best texture and flavor immediately after cooking.
- Slice the wedges evenly. For best results, slice the sweet potatoes into similar sized wedges with uniform thickness to promote even cooking.

Variations
- Everyday seasoning: Use ¼ teaspoon each of garlic powder, smoked paprika (hot or sweet), black pepper and sea salt. If you like a bit of heat in your sweet potato fries, add a pinch of chili powder.
- Mexican style sweet potatoes. Season with salt, pepper, chili powder, smoked paprika, onion powder, oregano and ground cumin.
- Cajun sweet potato fries/wedges. Slice the sweet potatoes into fries or wedges. Season with black pepper, ground cayenne pepper, and store-bought or homemade Cajun seasoning. Note that store-bought Cajun seasoning usually has salt already and can be quite salty. Add salt if needed and to taste.
- Garlic parmesan. Salt, pepper, garlic powder and ¼ cup finely shredded parmesan cheese. Alternatively, use nutritional yeast which is a vegan but adds wonderful cheesy flavors.
- Maple cinnamon sweet potato wedges. Add ½ tablespoon maple syrup, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, salt, pepper and use melted butter instead of oil.
- Use Japanese sweet potatoes. My personal favorite! Either purple skin sweet potatoes with pale flesh that turns yellow once cooked or red/purple-skinned potatoes with purple flesh will work. Note that the cooking time might vary if using Japanese sweet potatoes as they tend to cook quicker.

FAQs
About 13-17 minutes if air frying at 200°F/400°C. The cooking time will vary since all air fryers run differently. It also depends on how thin you slice the sweet potatoes and your desired crispiness. Mine took 16 minutes until they were cooked to my preference. In general, larger and thicker wedges will take longer to cook and shorter and thinner wedges will need a shorter cooking time.
Either too much oil was used or the basket was overcrowded, which prevented proper air circulation and made them soggy. Avoid overcrowding the basket and air fry in batches if needed.
Sure! Russet potatoes are a great option and you can air fry using the exact same method. You can also use any variety of sweet potatoes, yams, or other white fleshed potatoes such as Idaho potatoes or Yukon Gold.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges
These Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges are easy to make in 20 minutes and are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. All you need is 4 ingredients and your favorite dipping sauce to enjoy them as a delicious and healthy side dish or snack!
- Prep Time: 5
- Cook Time: 16
- Total Time: 21 minutes
- Yield: 1 1x
- Category: Sides
- Method: Air Fry
- Cuisine: American
- Diet: Vegetarian
Ingredients
- 10 ounces / 285 grams Sweet Potatoes
- 3ml / 6 sprays (about ½ TSP) Olive Oil Cooking Spray (or use ½–1 teaspoon olive oil, avocado oil, or melted coconut oil – note 1)
- ¼ teaspoon Fine Sea Salt, to taste
- ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked Black Pepper, to taste
- To Serve (optional): More salt and pepper, spicy ketchup, Thai sweet chili sauce, peri peri mayonnaise (Perinaise), honey mustard, or your favorite dipping sauce.
Instructions
- Preheat air fryer: Preheat the air fryer at 400°F/200°C for 3 minutes (or according to manufacturer’s instructions).
- Prepare the potatoes: Rinse and scrub the sweet potatoes. Pat-dry well with paper towels and place on a cutting board. Using a shark knife, cut off the ends and slice the sweet potatoes into wedges that are similar sized. Transfer to a medium bowl and spray with cooking oil spray. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste and toss to coat.
- Air fry: Line the wedges in an even layer in the air fryer basket without overlapping (they can touch though). You may need to air fry in batches depending on the size of your air fryer basket in order to avoid overcrowding. Air fry for 13-17 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Check for doneness using a fork to pierce the center of a large piece. They should be tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. If not, air fry for another 2-3 minutes or until done.
- Serve: Transfer to a plate and season with more salt and pepper if desired. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce or as a side.
Notes
- Cooking Oil Spray. You can use a ½ to 1 teaspoon of olive oil, avocado oil, or melted coconut oil instead of cooking oil spray instead. A little oil goes a long way when it comes to the air fryer and yielding crispy results. The less oil you use, the crispier the sweet potato wedges will become on the outside.
- Don’t overcrowd. If your air fryer is on the smaller side, air fry in batches instead of overcrowding the basket. While the sweet potatoes can touch, make sure they are in a single layer so that there is proper air circulation to ensure they cook evenly and become crispy.
- Cooking time. The cooking time will vary since all air fryers run differently. It also depends on how thin you slice the sweet potatoes and your desired crispiness. Mine took 16 minutes until they were cooked my preference. In general, larger and thicker wedges will take longer to cook and shorter and thinner wedges will need a shorter cooking time.
- Storing. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- To freeze. Once cooled, transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months.
- Reheating leftovers in the air fryer. To restore the crispiness, I recommend reheating in the air fryer and not the microwave. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F/190°C for 3 minutes. Line up the wedges in an even layer and air fry for 3-5 minutes, shaking the basket halfway until heated through. If reheating from frozen, air fry for 5-10 minutes in a preheated air fryer at 375°F/190°C, shaking the basket halfway until heated through.
