About This Recipe
Creamy, thick and chocolatey! I am absolutely in LOVE with this Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse dessert and have been making it on repeat!
Made with 3 simple ingredients, this high protein chocolate mousse is quick and easy to whip up and has 20 grams protein! It’s a smooth, decadent tasting and low-calorie treat made with all things good for you!
I like finishing off this healthy chocolate mouse with fresh raspberries, wheat puffs and a quick homemade chocolate shell topping. However, the chocolate shell topping is completely optional. You can enjoy it as is or with some whipped cream, berries, flaky sea salt, nuts, chocolate shavings, etc.
For this recipe, I used blended cottage cheese. I had it on hand since I had blended up the entire carton using an immersion handheld blender to make my Cottage Cheese Overnight Oats.
You can use pre-blended cottage cheese or store-bought whipped cottage cheese and mix all the ingredients together to make this high protein chocolate cottage cheese mousse. Or if you have regular cottage cheese that hasn’t been blended, simply pop all the ingredients in a food processor to make to make this healthy dessert!
If you’re a chocolate lover and looking for a high protein easy cottage cheese dessert or post-workout snack, give this Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse a try!

Why This Recipe Works
- Easy to make. All you need is 5 minutes to make it! Then let it chill in the fridge for a couple of minutes before eating!
- Healthy. It’s made with good-for-you ingredients and healthier than regular chocolate mousse which is made with heavy cream.
- High protein. Cottage cheese is naturally high in protein, making this a high protein dessert.
- Refined sugar free. It’s made without any added sugar and you can make it with any natural sweetener or sugar-free sweetener of your choice!
- Delicious! The velvety, thick and creamy texture that results from mixing cottage cheese with chocolate is to die for! The crispy chocolate shell topping takes it over the top and makes this healthy dessert absolutely irresistible!
Ingredient Notes and Substitutes

Chocolate Cottage Cheese Mousse:
- Cottage Cheese: I used low-fat blended cottage cheese (2%). Whole milk cottage cheese (4%) would also work and give this healthy dessert a thicker and richer texture. You can also use unblended cottage cheese (see recipe instructions).
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: I like using unsweetened Dutch process cocoa powder as it has a richer chocolate flavor than natural cocoa powder such as the one from Hershey’s. However, either will work for this recipe. You could also use cacao powder, which is packed with antioxidants and flavonoids. It’s more bitter in flavor though so you may need to use more sweetener.
- Maple Syrup: Sugar-free or regular. Or use your preferred liquid sweetener such as pancake syrup, date syrup, agave nectar, honey, etc. I used Walden Farms Pancake Syrup which is sugar-free. You could also use a powdered sugar replacement such as the Lakanto Powdered Monkfruit and Erythritol Sweetener, coconut sugar, stevia, allulose, or other sweetener of choice.
- Optional toppings: Whipped cream, flaky sea salt, chocolate shavings, raspberries (or other berries), nuts, a dollop of Greek yogurt, etc.
Crispy Chocolate Shell Topping (optional):
- Chocolate Chips: I like Guittard semisweet chocolate chips (64% cacao) but 70% dark chocolate from a bar is tasty too. You could also use chocolate baking wafers (semisweet, dark or milk chocolate). Or use sugar-free chocolate chips if desired.
- Coconut Oil: We’ll be melting the coconut oil with the chocolate chips.
- Khorasan Wheat Puffs: Also known as kamut puffed wheat cereal and Khorasan wheat. This 100% whole grain cereal has a chewy and crispy texture and a rich, nutty flavor. You could also use puffed rice, crushed rice cakes or Rice Krispies cereal.

How to Make Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse
Below is a step-by-step overview on how to make this recipe. Keep scrolling down to get to the recipe card below with the full recipe and detailed instructions!

Add the Khorasan wheat puffs on top of the set chocolate mousse and immediately pour the melted chocolate mixture on top. Cover and place in the freezer or fridge for 5 minutes until hardened.

Topping Ideas
The world is your oyster when it comes to toppings for this healthy cottage cheese mousse! Below are some of my favorite toppings.
- Berries. Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or other fresh fruit like diced mango, sliced banana, pomegranate perils, etc.
- Nuts. Chopped pistachios would give this chocolate mousse the viral Dubai chocolate vibes! You can add it on the melted chocolate topping so that it sets in the chocolate. Chopped roasted almonds, hazelnuts, macadamia, walnuts, etc. would also be delicious.
- Whipped cream. Homemade or store-bought. Cool Whip is also great.
- Chocolate Shavings. Or chocolate chips!
- Granola. I love topping it with my Chocolate Hazelnut Granola!
- Flakey sea salt. Such as Maldon Sea Salt Flakes. It pairs wonderfully with chocolate!

Cook’s Tips
- Sift the cocoa powder. Not compulsory but recommend. Sifting the cocoa powder makes it easier to mix and prevent the mousse from having cocoa powder lumps. If blending the ingredients in a food processor, you don’t need to worry about sifting.
- Use cottage cheese that has recently been blended. If your cottage cheese was blended several days in advance, the mousse will have a looser texture and won’t be as thick.
- Adjust sweetener to taste. Use more or less to taste. Note that if using a liquid sweetener, the more you use the less thick and creamy the mousse will be. It’ll still taste delicious but may need a little longer time to set or the texture will be more like a cottage cheese chocolate pudding.
- Chill for less time. If you’re making it last minute, I recommend chilling in the fridge for 5 minutes to set, then 5 minutes after you add the chocolate shell topping. It won’t be as firm and thick but will still be tasty!
Variations
Dietary Modifications
- Dairy-free/Vegan. Use a dairy-free/lactose-free cottage cheese and dairy-free chocolate chips for the chocolate shell topping
- Gluten-free. No modifications needed as all ingredients are gluten-free. However, if you have an intolerance, make sure the products you use are processed in a gluten-free facility so that there’s no risk of cross-contamination.
Preference/Flavor Customizations
- Add vanilla extract. A small amount goes a long way to add warming vanilla notes and enhances the chocolate flavor.
- Add nut butter. Stir in a tablespoon of peanut butter for a chocolate peanut butter mousse. Almond butter, homemade pecan butter, or Lotus Biscoff Spread would also be delicious! You could also use sunflower seed butter or tahini if you are allergic to nuts.
- Make a chocolate layered mousse. Layer with whipped cream, berries, and top with granola for a chocolate mousse parfait.
- Top with or stir in crumbled cookies. Crumbled Oreos, Lotus Biscoff Cookies, Chips Ahoy, etc.
- Make a mint chocolate mousse. Add a drop or two of peppermint extract and top with whipped cream and crushed peppermint candy or candy cane for a refreshing mint chocolate mousse!
- Add chia seeds. It’ll thicken up the cottage cheese mousse further. Use ground chia seeds for the best texture.
- Use Cocoa Krispies. Instead of kamut puffs. They’ll add an extra chocolatey flavor that’s perfect for chocolate lovers!

FAQs
You can make the chocolate mousse up to 24 hours ahead. However, I recommend making the chocolate shell topping with the puffed wheat just before eating. The puffed wheat tends to become soft and soggy in the fridge after a couple of hours. The same would happen if you use puffed rice, crushed rice cakes, or Rice Krispies cereal.
The chocolate cottage cheese mousse without any toppings has 146 calories, 20.1 grams protein, 4.2 grams fat, 12.2 grams carbohydrates, and 3.1 grams fiber.
If making the optional chocolate shell topping with 20 grams fresh raspberries (5-6 pieces), it will have 236 calories, 21 grams protein, 10.1 grams fat, 23.5 grams carbohydrates, and 5.1 grams fiber.
Sure, but the texture will be different and more like a thick and creamy protein yogurt. It’ll still be delicious though! If using Greek yogurt, mix the ingredients in a bowl or ramekin until smooth and chill in the fridge to set.
